Jobs scene–and manufacturing prospects–picking up in the Midwest

Between this March and last, Michigan's jobless rate dropped from 13.3 percent to 10.3 percent, according to Labor Department numbers. That 3 percentage-point decline led the nation. Illinois and Indiana were second and third--with rates that went from 11 percent to 8.8 percent, and 10.6 percent to 8.5 percent, respectively. And Ohio was tied for fourth, with a 1.6 percentage-point drop. Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio now all have jobless rates below the national average of 9 percent.

The revival of the auto industry appears to have had a hand in the success. Recent months have seen a string of announcements from General Motors and Chrysler about new jobs and shifts not just in Michigan but throughout the region--culminating in the news last week that G.M. would invest $2 billion at 18 plants. Even Flint, Mich., which Michael Moore turned into a symbol of the loss of American manufacturing jobs in his 1989 film, "Roger and Me"--is getting in on the action.

At the county level, we endorse a vote for Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano, the Democrat.

Free Press Endorses Ficano

ROBERT FICANO, 58, of Livonia merits retention as the Wayne County executive for another four-year term.

Democrat Ficano has held the job since 2003 and does not always get the credit he deserves for orchestrating economic development. His office led the aerotropolis project, which spans Wayne and Washtenaw Counties and is based on an interlocal agreement among nine municipalities. It already has landed 15 companies that see the benefits of locating near Metro and Willow Run Airports.

He also has worked on fostering regional agreements and, of recent note, has brought business and union representatives together to meet site selection consultants to ensure they do not view the region as a place of labor-management acrimony. He remains committed to nursing along regional transportation.

Ficano's trips to China get jobs as souvenirs

By Tom Walsh - Detroit Free Press

Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano first traveled to China in 2005 and will make his sixth visit in November, to court companies and investors interested in doing business in the jobs-starved Detroit region.

It's taken awhile for Ficano's efforts to pay off on a major scale, but last week's news that a Chinese group will buy the $2.1-billion-a-year, 6,200-employee Nexteer auto parts operation from General Motors is a big step forward.

Region races to grow air commerce

Louis Aguilar / The Detroit News

The 60,000 acres between Detroit Metropolitan and Willow Run airports are mainly empty grassland, surrounded by suburbia.

But most state and local leaders contend the area known as the Detroit Region Aerotropolis, or airport city, will become the 21st-century economic engine for Michigan.

Wayne County and other local leaders envision the aerotropolis revitalizing Detroit, based on the strength of its open international border.

The region's advantages, proponents contend, will attract new businesses that need fast transport -- like the A123 Systems battery plants, aimed for electric and hybrid vehicles, being built in Livonia and Romulus. Or the $100 million research and development center being built by General Electric Co. in Van Buren Township. Related companies, residences and development, they believe, will follow.

"It's going to go way beyond logistic firms," aviation and freight, Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano said. "We already have firms moving and interested that have to do with (the making of) the Chevy Volt."

Should You Buy American Now?

By: Jamie Page Deaton

US News and World Report

How things change. Last year at this time the news was filled with stories of the demise of the American auto industry. Pundits crowed that years of building poor-quality products, and a refusal to keep pace with changing consumer demands -- not to mention a global recession -- had finally done the American auto industry in.

Now, just about a year later, the story is runaway Toyotas, while domestic automakers reap awards and revenue. So, now that the shoe is on the other foot, should you buy an American car now? Here are five reasons why you should.

Ficano says he'll seek a 3rd term

By JOHN WISELY

Detroit Free Press

Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano will seek a third term, he announced to cheers at the UAW Solidarity House this evening.

“We know the future is going to be in Wayne County, that’s why we’re not running for governor, we’re running for re-election in Wayne County,” Ficano said.

The crowd of about 250 people included leaders from local government, business, labor and clergy.  Among those cheering were two people who have at times been mentioned as Ficano’s potential rivals for county executive: Prosecutor Kym Worthy and Sheriff Benny Napoleon.  Both offered their support today, as did UAW Vice President Bob King, who called Ficano a great friend.

“Bob has always been there, not just for the UAW, but for all working people,” King said.

Aerotropolis plan gains support

Lansing -- Bipartisan support for the Detroit Region Aerotropolis appeared to take flight Tuesday, as long as Michigan creates more areas where businesses can locate and avoid paying local and state taxes.

Officials from Oakland and Wayne counties backed a series of bills, sponsored by Democrats and Republicans, known as the Next Development Act at a Tuesday hearing of the Senate Committee for Commerce and Tourism.

Ficano to make a plea with D.C., Ala. Ads

Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano is going on the air today — in Washington, D.C., and Alabama — to make his best case for why the domestic automakers should get federal help. Ficano used $10,000 from his campaign fundto buy airtimeonradio stationsWAPI and WZRR in Birmingham, Ala., and WMAL in Washington, D.C. The ads will run hourly from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. today.

The ads on the two Alabama stations are targeted at constituents of Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., who on Sunday called the domestic auto industry a dinosaur that shouldn't be helped.
